MACRAMÉ - THE ART OF COUPLING KNOTS: (Social responsibility /Partnership)

Macramé is a technique of weaving knits that doesn't use any machine type or tool. Only hands are used. By working with fingers, threads are weaved and tied in knots, forming geometric crossings, fringes and many different ornamental items.

The word Macramé means “knot ". There are versions on its origin, that the word comes from the Arabian, Turkish, and even from French idioms.

The art was originated in the pre-history, when the man started weaving fibers to wrap him, and create other articles. As of today, the art of weaving knots is very appreciated due to artisan's ability and work fineness.

Macramé - In a small village in Brazil Southern, in Santa Catarina State, there is a community of teenagers, who are perfecting the art of Macramé: it is Itaiópolis with 20,000 inhabitants. Colonized by Englishmen, Germans and Poles, the city main economical activity is the agriculture, more precisely, the cultivation of the corn, bean and tobacco. Further, its natural beauty is attractive for rural tourism development.

Macramé - Itaiópolis youths' community develops the art of Macramé guided by teacher Celina Adam, who has already introduced lots of people to the art and has plans to go much farther. She intends to train more people, organize the community, and take the work abroad. Her activities started with a dream: to contribute for improving the village persons’ quality of life - even if necessary to pay for teaching. And so she did: many times she had to finance material and transport to teach the village poor people.

In Itaiópolis, teenagers study part-time and afterward they make Macramé. By so doing, they provide financial support to their families, because there are also unemployment and lake of opportunity there.

Sogni Belli people do believe that such dreams only turn into reality when the personal dedication is stronger than the dream itself - not only by personal effort of idealists like teacher Celina, but by firm commitment of the whole society.
